I know this seems complicated, but it’s really not, and it goes pretty quickly once you get the hang of it:
Step 1: Glue 3 pieces of string to the back of the first picture; 1 centered on the top, and 2 on the bottom sides. Take the second picture and glue 3 strings on the front; 2 on the front top sides and 1 centered on the bottom.
Step 2: Flip the picture 1 over face-side-up and pull the strings over the top. You should have 2 strings at the top and 1 at the bottom.
Step 3: Place the second picture face down, top-side-down, over picture 1. There should be 3 pieces of string on the top and bottom, and the glued side should be on the inside.
Step 4: Pull picture 1 strings over edge. You should have 2 on the top sides and 1 on the bottom center of picture 2. Glue strings close to the edge.
Step 5: Snip off excess string. You will use the 3 strands for the next picture.
Step 6: Take picture 3, and treat it as picture 1 – Glue 3 pieces of string to the back of the first picture; 1 centered on the top, and 2 on the bottom sides.
Step 7: Pull strings from picture 2 over, as you did in step 3.
Step 8: Lay picture 3 picture-side-up, top-side-up, on top of picture number 2. Once again, there should be 3 strands on the top and bottom with the glued-side down.
Step 9: Pull strings from picture 2 over picture 3 and glue close to edge. There should be 2 glued on top sides and 1 on bottom center. Snip off excess string to use on picture 4.
Step 10: Glue two strings on top sides of front and 1 string on bottom center of picture 4.
Step 11: Pull picture 3 strings over top of picture. Place picture 4 as you did picture 2 – Front-side-down and top-side-down. Glue strands from picture 3 down. There should be 2 glued on the top sides and 1 on the bottom center.
At this point, check to make sure the Jacob’s Ladder is working. It would be sad to get this far and have the pictures upside down or sideways.
Step 12: Take picture 5, treating it as picture 1 – Glue 3 pieces of string to the back of the first picture; 1 centered on the top, and 2 on the bottom sides. Pull picture 4 strings over picture. Place picture 5 Front-side-up, top-side-up on top of picture 4. Pull picture 4 strings over picture 5 and glue in place. There should be 1 string glued in the center of the top and 2 on each of the bottom sides.
Step 13: Leaving picture 6 string-free, pull picture 5 strings over picture.
Step 14: Place picture 6 upside-down, top-side-down over picture 5. There should be 2 strands on top sides and 1 on bottom center. Pull picture 5 strings over edge of picture 6, glue, and snip.

I glued quotes and our covenants/blessings on the backs, upside-down, so when the handout gets flipped over they’re readable:

Such a crack up!

And how do crackers help me stay up longer, you may ask? Well, it’s simple, really. I shout, “Daddy! Cracker, please!” and he brings me one. A few minutes later, I shout it again and he brings me another one. If I’m extra lucky, Aurora will be asleep and Daddy will rock-a-bye me or take me out to the kitchen to get the cracker. What can I say, I know how to crack Daddy to get what I want.

The lesson talks about the story of Jacob’s ladder:

“When Jacob traveled from Beersheba toward Haran, he had a dream in which he saw himself on the earth at the foot of a ladder that reached to heaven where the Lord stood above it. He beheld angels ascending and descending thereon, and Jacob realized that the covenants he made with the Lord there were the rungs on the ladder that he himself would have to climb in order to obtain the promised blessing—blessings that would entitle him to enter heaven and associate with the Lord” (Marion G. Romney, “Temples—The Gates to Heaven,” Ensign, Mar. 1971, p. 16).

I have to admit, I didn’t remember this story representing the covenants and ordinances we receive in order to obtain Eternal Life with our Heavenly Father. But it presented a cool handout idea. Many of you may have seen the wooden Jacob’s Ladder toys that flip down as you rotate the top block. Well, I thought it would be fun to do a Jacob’s Ladder Handout. I haven’t gotten them printed yet, but this is a rough idea of what they’ll look like:
